This year, remember your flu and COVID-19 shots

This year, be sure to get your flu shot AND get boosted for COVID-19.
Flu cases dipped the past two years because people had to wear masks, health experts say. With no mask mandates, cases may rise and experts warn about coinfection — contracting both viruses simultaneously. The best line of defense: Get both vaccines.

“You have to take the proper pre¬cautions,” said Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail. “If not, it becomes even more of a challenge for the body’s immune system.”

MESSA fully covers the COVID-19 vaccine and booster. To find a vaccine or booster provider, visit vaccines.gov or call 2-1-1.

MESSA fully covers the flu shot, too, when you go to a payable provider, which includes:

  • Your in-network provider.
  • Select retail pharmacies. Most pharmacies administer a flu shot for free and bill MESSA. If a pharmacy asks you for payment, go to a different pharmacy or contact MESSA’s Member Service Center at 800-336-0013 so we can ensure you receive it at no charge.
  • Your local health department. Most public health departments require payment. If you pay for your vaccination, complete a claims reimbursement form and send it to MESSA with your receipt. Find the reimbursement form at messa.org/Forms under Member Claims.
