Get to know your improved MESSA card

You may have noticed that your new MESSA card has some additional information on it. We want to be sure you understand what it all means, so here’s a breakdown of the most important info:

  1. Subscriber ID: This number identifies your records in MESSA’s files. Previously, it was called “Enrollee ID,” and sometimes it’s referred to as your “Member ID.” These terms are all interchangeable.
  2. Deductible: This section is a new addition to your MESSA card. It details what you will pay out of pocket until you meet your deductible, which is the annual amount you pay for health services before MESSA starts paying. Preventive care — such as your annual physical — is always free for members and covered dependents, and does not count toward your deductible.
You’ll see that there are two different deductibles listed: In-network and Out-of-network. All MESSA plans have different levels of benefits for in-network and out-of-network services. You will pay less out of pocket if you use in-network providers and facilities. You will pay higher deductibles and coinsurance for out-of-network services. Out-of-network expenses do not count toward your in-network deductible or out-of-pocket max.
  3. Out-of-Pocket Max: This section is also new, and it details your annual out-of-pocket maximum — the most you will pay out of pocket for covered services in a calendar year. It includes all deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance.
Your MESSA card shows your in-network maximum and your out-of-network maximum. Depending on your plan, you may also have an Rx out-of-pocket maximum, which details the most you will pay annually for prescription copayments and/or coinsurance.
  4. PPO inside a suitcase: The suitcase lets providers know that your MESSA coverage goes with you when you travel. The PPO inside the suitcase tells providers that you have a network to adhere to, even while traveling.
  5. Rx: This icon shows that your MESSA plan comes with prescription coverage.
