Meet your MESSA card

MESSA membership has its perks. Your MESSA card grants you access to MESSA’s exceptional health benefits and the largest network of providers in the state.

Every MESSA member with a medical plan has two MESSA card options:

  • The plastic card that’s probably nestled in your wallet right now. You would typically show this card during medical appointments and at the pharmacy.
  • A virtual card that you can find in your MyMESSA account or in the MESSA app. This is a helpful option when you’re filling out paperwork and need to include your insurance info (or if you forgot your wallet when you left for the doctor’s office).

Your MESSA card contains a wealth of info needed to properly bill the services and care you receive from providers. Here’s a breakdown of the more relevant information on it.

  1. Subscriber ID: This number is unique to you and identifies records in MESSA’s database for you and your covered dependents.
  1. Issue date: The date your card was issued.
  1. RxBIN and RxGrp: This information communicates to pharmacies how to correctly bill your prescriptions.
  1. Suitcase: That little bag shows providers that your MESSA plan travels with you wherever you go. The PPO inside of it lets providers know that your plan is part of a “preferred provider network,” and helps make it easier to identify in-network providers.
  1. Deductible: This section shows what you pay out of your own pocket until you meet your deductible (the annual amount you pay for health services before MESSA starts paying your claims).
  1. Out-of-Pocket Max: This section details the most you will pay for covered services in a calendar year. It includes all deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance. Depending on your plan, your card may also show an Rx out-of-pocket maximum, which details the most you will pay annually for prescription copayments and/or coinsurance.
  1. Rx icon: This simply shows that you have prescription coverage.

Pro Tips

Your virtual card always has the most up-to-date info. If you compare it to your plastic card and see a difference, you can order a new plastic card through your MyMESSA account. However, if the subscriber ID, group number and RxBIN all match, your plastic card will work perfectly fine, and you can keep some plastic out of the landfill.

You can save your virtual MESSA card to your smartphone for easy access.
